Crossword Puzzle – Age 10 – 12
Hellfire Pass is a part of the Burma Railway, which was built during the Second World War. The railway passed through thick jungle in Thailand and Burma, making construction very difficult. Many prisoners of war (POWs) and local workers were forced to build it under harsh conditions.
They used metal tracks to lay the railway and built bridges over rivers and valleys. Many workers suffered from hunger, disease, and exhaustion. Some did not survive and were buried in cemeteries. The railway became known for its hardships, and today, memorials honour those who worked on it.
